Why do family caregivers experience such extremes while caring for their loved ones? These experiences vary from some of the most satisfying and compelling to the most harrowing and traumatic experiences of our lives.

I've put together a set of factors that influence the caregiving experience based on seven years as a primary family caregiver and the hundreds of caregiving stories & experiences that I've been connected to. In addition, I have been creating caregiver support programs and caregiver insight tools for a major non-profit for the past two years.

The first step is to become deeply connected to your own life story and journey. Then we take a look at how caregiving can support your life journey rather than be a side-trip or derail your life.

In doing this we look at all the factors that contribute to difficulty, burden and also caregiver success, creating a care map that is unique to you. This map helps shine a light on how to care for another person and not lose yourself in the process.

Here are the main factors that influence caregiver success:

Each involves a simple 5-7 minute quiz (left column). We will mail you the results and then you can tally them below and get a sense of the level of care that is appropriate given your situation (right column).

Interpreting the Results

If your aggregate number is below zero then you are likely to encounter significant difficulty on your caregiving journey making it unsustainable over the longer term. The main area to focus on is to increase your level of support to bring that number up. Also, you can reduce the degree of difficulty by reducing the level of care or, finding more support, either within the family or through adding more resources.

Note: negotiating for more support is KEY to success on the caregiving journey.
